The History of the Chauffeur

Although we at Elite Travel Services like to think we’re the best in the business, especially in the Bournemouth, Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire areas, we acknowledge that there’s a history and tradition behind what we do.

Why do we use the word chauffeur, for example?

Well, the answer lies in the literal translation of the word chauffeur.

It comes from the French term for stoker, as much like the ships and railways of the day, the earliest cars were, in fact, steam-powered, and before the advent of the ignition, which we take for granted today, the chauffeur (or heater-upper), would prime the hot tubes at the beginning of the journey and then the natural function of the engine would keep the tubes at the right temperature.

Bournemouth chauffeur sounds so much nicer than Bournemouth ‘Heater-Upper’ or Dorset ‘Stoker.’

But your chauffeur is so much more than just a driver.

Navigator, first-aider, confidante, the driver is at your disposal, and they won’t be phased by any ad-hoc requests – all part of the service – we’ve been known to do the odd emergency running repair to a bride’s dress or groom’s suit on some of our wedding chauffeur journeys.

We’ve transported the great and the good over the years and have developed a reputation for discretion, punctuality and reliability – and we protect it fiercely.

Just as some of the most famous people in history relied on their chauffeur, you can always rely on Elite Travel Services for your corporate, wedding, airport or pleasure travel, and whether you live in Sandbanks or somewhere more modest, you can expect the same level of service – we treat every person who travels with us like they’re the most important people in the world – and that’s because you are!

You’re as important to us as Dwight D. Eisenhower was to his personal driver, Irish-born Kay Summersby during the time he served as Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force, during the Second World War.

Think of the conversations that Roosevelt Sanders must have heard whilst driving the likes of Sir Winston Churchill, Richard Nixon and Fidel Castro, amongst others? Not to mention the personal services he carried out like a $200,000 cash delivery for Aristotle Onassis.

For a more whimsical look at the duties of the chauffeur, you just just can’t beat Aloysius ‘Nosey’ Parker from the TV series ‘Thunderbirds.’

He wouldn’t make it on the staff of Elite Travel Services due to his (albeit reformed) penchant for criminal activity.

Our drivers are squeaky clean, in every sense of the word. We insist on the best

Reputations are built upon history and we’re proud to have chauffeured the people of Somerset, Wiltshire and Dorset over the years – and, whilst we had a little look into the history of the chauffeur, we hope it conveys some of the pride, passion and dedication we have to our vocation.
